I came to the U.S. in 1981 with $100, a suitcase, and no fluency in English. Having been born, raised, lived, and worked abroad, one fundamental pillar of relationships has absolutely stuck with me. The rest of the world builds relationships first, from which they do business. The literal translation of the Arabic word Bin means son of, so your genealogy often matters more in many circumstances than any product or service you may represent.
Unfortunately, many of us as Americans, or to a broader extent, Western culture professionals, are so focused on business transactions that if and only if the business part works, we may ask our contacts about their significant others, what they do for fun outside of work, or how their upbringing may have impacted their leadership journey.
