SCOTTSDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Lining the walls at an Old Town Scottsdale saloon sit thousands of dollar bills. However, the cash isn’t just for show; it benefits Valley children and families in need.
Each year, the Rusty Spur Saloon, located near Main Street and Brown Avenue, collects all the dollar bills and donates them to the Phoenix Children’s Foundation. Last year was a great success, as the bar donated over $6,000!
The tradition began in the early days of the bar, founded in 1951.
“When the cowboys got paid, they would come in and put a dollar bill. They will put their name on a dollar bill and pin it on the wall. That way, when they were all out of money, they could still come in and grab a drink,” said Janeth Moore, operations manager of the Rusty Spur.
