How the engineering company behind Apple’s iconic HQ in California lost $25 million in deepfake scam

An engineering company that has provided its expertise in designing and architecture of Apple Park, the iconic headquarters of the iPhone-maker, recently lost $25 million after one its employees fell victim to deepfake scam, as report has claimed.

In what is dubbed one of the world’s biggest known deepfake scams, London-based Arup lost HK$200 million (approx $25 million) after fraudsters reportedly used a digitally cloned version of the company’s CFO and other staff members and ordered financial transfers during a video conference, the Financial Times reported.

Hong Kong police revealed the incident in February but the name of the victim company was not disclosed.

“The FT has confirmed it was Arup, which employs about 18,000 people globally and has annual revenues of more than GBP 2 billion,” the publication said.
